Lazy people and students often are on social media while walking because it is convenient and allows for the opportunity of doing something meaningful with their wasted outside time. Who wants to look at trees, architecture, or even other people?
This new trend is one that I can get behind as I often search and use social media when walking around town and having a "special" lane could be nice to keep people in a rush and the texters separate so everyone. In 2012 the number of people where injured in some manner rose 35% in just two years. Around 78,000 people where hurt in some manner of walking injury and cell phone use is considered a major part in the growth of this trend.
When this issue was brought up in class it made me quite upset. I think we all spend too much time on our devices, and the fact that these "texting lanes" are popping up just validates my point. Why can't we just put our phones away and pay attention to everything that surrounds us? I'm not trying to evoke an argument, your post just arose some thoughts.
